NSW Battery Rebate – Cheaper Home Solar Batteries Program
Hunter Valley, Newcastle, Central Coast & Sydney
What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
How Does the Battery Rebate Work?
The battery incentive is linked to Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). Eligible battery installations can create STCs, which have a financial value and can contribute to reducing the upfront cost of an eligible battery installation.
The amount of support available depends on factors including the battery's eligible usable capacity, installation date and the applicable STC rules at the time of installation.
Importantly, the program has changed since it was first introduced. From 1 May 2026, the STC factor for batteries began tapering according to battery capacity.
- Up to and including 14 kWh – 100% of the applicable STC factor
- More than 14 kWh and up to 28 kWh – 60% of the applicable STC factor
- More than 28 kWh and up to 50 kWh – 15% of the applicable STC factor
The STC factor itself also changes over time, meaning the exact financial benefit of a battery rebate should be confirmed when your system is being quoted and installed.

Who Can Access the Battery Rebate?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program supports eligible Australian households and small businesses installing eligible small-scale battery systems.
Battery systems can be connected to new or existing rooftop solar, subject to the program's eligibility requirements.
Eligibility can depend on factors such as:
- The battery system being installed
- The usable battery capacity
- The installation date
- The existing or proposed solar system
- Whether the property is residential or a qualifying small business
- Whether the equipment meets the relevant program requirements
Because government incentive rules can change, your eligibility and expected incentive should be confirmed as part of the current quotation process.
Can I Get a Battery Rebate If I Already Have Solar?
Yes. The program can support eligible battery systems connected to existing rooftop solar, as well as eligible batteries installed alongside new solar systems.
This means you may not need to replace your existing solar panels simply because you want to add battery storage.
Adding a battery to an existing solar system can allow you to store some of the excess electricity your panels generate during the day and use that stored energy later.
Before adding a battery, your existing solar system, inverter and electrical infrastructure should be assessed to determine the most suitable configuration.

Why Add a Solar Battery?
A solar battery allows you to store electricity generated by your solar panels for use when your solar system is producing less energy.
For many properties, this can mean using more of the renewable energy generated on site rather than exporting excess electricity and purchasing electricity from the grid later.
Depending on the system and how it is operated, a battery may help you:
- Store excess solar energy
- Use more of your own renewable electricity
- Reduce electricity purchased from the grid
- Better manage electricity consumption
- Take advantage of different electricity pricing periods
- Increase energy independence
- Potentially provide backup power where the system is configured for it
However, a battery is not automatically the right choice for every property. The costs and potential benefits should be considered before making an investment.

Battery Rebate Frequently Asked Questions
Is there still a battery rebate in 2026?
Yes. The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program continues to provide support for eligible small-scale battery installations. The incentive structure changed from 1 May 2026, so current eligibility and incentive calculations should be checked at the time of quotation.
How much can I save with the battery rebate?
There is no single fixed amount that applies to every battery. The financial benefit depends on the battery's eligible capacity, installation date and the applicable STC rules.
Can I get the rebate if I already have solar panels?
Potentially, yes. Eligible batteries can be connected to new or existing rooftop solar, provided the system meets the program's requirements.
Does the battery rebate apply to businesses?
Eligible small businesses may be able to access the program for qualifying small-scale battery installations. Eligibility should be confirmed based on the specific property and system.
What is the benefit of combining solar panels and a battery?
Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, while a battery can store suitable excess generation for later use. Together, they can help a household make greater use of the renewable energy produced by its solar system.
Does the battery size affect the rebate?
Yes. From 1 May 2026, the STC factor is progressively reduced across different portions of battery capacity. This means the incentive is affected by the usable capacity of the battery.
Is Now the Right Time to Add a Solar Battery?
The battery incentive can reduce the upfront cost of an eligible battery system, but the right battery is not necessarily the largest battery or the cheapest battery.
The most important step is understanding how your property uses electricity and selecting a battery that matches your actual energy requirements.
Whether you already have solar or are considering a complete solar and battery system, MV Solar can help you understand your options.
